Foursquare means business. The 1-year-old startup now has a huge brand — Starbucks — using its platform to test out an experimental customer rewards program.

Starting today, frequent Starbucks visitors who check in at retail locations using Foursquare will earn customer rewards. Although there’s no financial incentive or free coffee to begin with, customers can unlock the “Barista badge” after five checkins.

Of course that’s just the beginning; the coffee behemoth plans to use Foursquare as a testing ground for alternative reward strategies and to unlock “the pulse of the experience” for each store.

If you think this is a straight-up play to offer location-based mobile coupons, think again. The New York Times Bits Blog writes that the company is “hoping to use Foursquare to provide even more meaningful prizes, like invitations to special events, photo-sharing or online reputation scores.”

As Starbucks figures out how best to leverage the checkin, we have to step back and appreciate the magnitude of this decision. With Starbucks on board, there’s no question that Foursquare has all the tools necessary to appeal to — and reach — a mainstream audience. Plus, now that a second company (the first was Tasti D-Lite) is tapping into Foursquare as a loyalty program platform, the additional proof of concept will pave the way for other businesses to follow suit.

Finalmente Sony anunció oficialmente su nuevo control de movimientos denominado PlayStation Move. El diseño final del control no dista mucho de las imágenes que se habían filtrado con anterioridad, con una bola de llamativo color que facilita la captura de los movimientos por parte de la cámara PlayStation Eye.

Las primeras impresiones rescatadas por las personas que han tenido acceso al control destacan su precisión, velocidad de respuesta y lo fácil de usar, lo que lo ubica un peldaño más arriba del control de la Nintendo Wii.

El control Move también tendrá un complemento similar al nunchuck de Nintendo, claro que este se conectará de forma inalámbrica a la consola, tal como el Move.

La compañía señaló que el control será comercializado a partir de Otoño en el hemisferio norte, pudiendo optar a un pack en donde se incluirá el control Move, la cámara PS Eye y un juego por debajo de los USD$ 100.

¿Se puede hacer algo con los inmensas cantidades de relaves mineros que existen en nuestro país y que por lo general hacen tanto daño al medio ambiente? Por supuesto que sí es la respuesta del ingeniero Alfonso Romero Baylón, jefe de un estudio que llegó a producir ladrillos y baldosas a partir de la reutilización de estos materiales contaminantes. Para ello se desarrolló una serie de técnicas y metodologías que convocó la participación de físicos, químicos, biólogos, ingenieros eléctrónicos, metalúrgicos y de minas. Es más, en un comienzo, en el 2001, tuvo la colaboración de profesionales de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid y el Instituto Geológico y Minero de España. 

“Mediante la metodología de fijación y micro-encapsulación de los metales pesados en los relaves mineros, en la investigación realizada se ha logrado estabilizar a los metales peligrosos y contaminantes que se encuentran en los relaves, anulando el proceso natural de migración de estos metales en el medio físico (medio ambiente)”, explicó Alfonso Romero Baylón, director de la Escuela Académico Profesional de Ingeniería de Minas de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos.

Queda claro que los ladrillos o baldosas fabricados con los residuos sólidos de las mineras están libres de toda toxicidad, porque previamente los materiales contaminates fueron neutralizados y estabilizados. “Por medio de diversas pruebas de toxicología y aplicando la metodología 3111-EPA y otras más se estableció que el producto final que es el agregado de construcción obtenido a partir de los relaves mineros poli metálicos, no son contaminantes”, afirmó.

EVITAR CONTAMINACIÓN
Según  informó el especialista, solo una  mina en operación en el Perú produciría cerca de nueve millones de toneladas de relaves. “Pero eso solo es el caso de una mina en operación, pues hay que recordar que actualmente están en funcionamiento 150 minas”.

Añadió que con este estudio se evitaría que dichos contaminantes vayan, por ejemplo, a las aguas subterráneas o superficiales, así como se mantengan en los suelos de la zona de influencia de estos depósitos.

Los ladrillos y baldosas fabricadas con este material reutilizado podrían servir en las bases de soporte de las edificaciones, en fachadas y pisos de obras civiles urbanas y en las cimentaciones de los puentes peatonales debido a que su resistencia es similar al de un concreto común. Asimismo las baldosas se pueden emplear en las aceras, pisos de los parques o plazas centrales, sugirió el especialista.

Asimismo el investigador sanmarquino sugirió que si acaso existiera una empresa interesada en fabricarlos en grandes cantidades debería hacerlos en los lugares cercanos en donde existen estos relaves para así ahorrar costos en transporte y no se eleven los precios de este novedoso material de construcción.

El estudio, basado en investigaciones realizadas en los relaves mineros de una zona de Ancash, se encuentra en su fase de transferencia tecnológica y que de momento están a  la espera de una respuesta de solicitud de patente solicitada al Instituto Nacional de Defensa de la Competencia y de la Protección de la Propiedad Intelectual (Indecopi).

MINERÍA RESPONSABLE
Según el ingeniero Rómulo Mucho, los pasivos ambientales que son principalmente relaves, aguas ácidas, algunos botaderos de desmonte constituyen la mala imagen que la minería ha dejado en el pasado y que es uno de los argumentos para quienes se oponen al desarrollo de la minería.

“Es obvio que ha existido impacto ambiental, pero habría que tener una línea base para cuantificar estos impactos, lo que sí puedo decir es que como la naturaleza es sabia, también ha sabido autoremediarse  y por ello no tenemos situaciones que  lamentar, excepto algunos casos puntuales”, comentó.

Precisó también que algunos relaves antiguos tienen valor porque contienen metales valiosos y que hoy se puede procesar nuevamente para extraer los metales que valen. “En otro caso, existen pasivos que ya no tienen dueño, entonces su remediación está a cargo del Estado, pero también la industria minera en su conjunto tiene que tomar cartas en el asunto”, sentenció.

A new study from security firm Barracuda Labs provides some interesting insights into the state of the Twitterverse. Unfortunately for the microblogging startup, the stats say that most of its users aren’t very active.

The study looked at around 19 million Twitter accounts (PDF) in order to figure out how people are using Twitter. It started with one assumption: An active or “True” Twitter user has at least 10 followers, follows at least 10 people and had tweeted at least 10 times. By that definition though, only 21% of Twitter users are active users.

There’s a great deal of interesting data in the breakdown. Only 26% of Twitter users had 10 followers or more by December 2009, while only 40% were following 10 people or more (in fact, a majority of Twitter users, 51%, were following less than five people).

In terms of tweets, the report estimates that 34% of Twitter users hadn’t tweeted even once, while a whopping 73% of Twitter’s users tweeted less than 10 times. That means nearly all of the tweets on the social network were coming from about one-fourth of the userbase. Power users dominate.

Barracuda Labs also analyzed Twitter’s growth over time, and the numbers are consistent with previous reports that show while Twitter grew like wildfire in early 2009, it has dramatically slowed down in recent months. Going back further to early 2008, the report estimates that the microblogging tool grew by just 0.31%. However, with the quick rise of media coverage and the influx of celebrities such as Oprah and Shaq, Twitter use grew by 20% in April 2009 before dropping off to 0.34% growth in December 2009.

While the news isn’t stellar, it isn’t all bad for Twitter — these metrics are moving in the right direction. A full 79% of users had less than 10 tweets in June 2009, but that number dropped to 73% by December. Eighty percent of users had less than 10 followers in June 2009, but that percentage dropped to 74% by December. If that trend continues, you’ll hopefully see a more diverse and active Twitterverse going forward.

Magazine publisher Condé Nast said it won't turn to pay walls to help deflect its 2009 $1 billion loss in ad revenue, despite the fact that one of its magazines, The New Yorker, currently hides its article archives behind a pay wall.

At the Bloomberg BusinessWeek 2010 Media Summit, Condé Nast's vice president for business development, Julie Michalowski, bashed the idea of pay walls, (Fishbowl NY reports):

All of a sudden walling off our content and saying you can't have it, I don't think that's the right strategy.

What we can continue to do is to build digital relationships so that we can have a multi-channel relationship with our consumers that includes print and includes other ways that they want to access us.

One of these "other ways" is Apple's iPad, which is slated to come out later this year.  Condé Nast has been preparing for the launch by recreating magazines including GQ, Vanity Fair, and Wired, in hopes that the new form of publication can boost alternate revenue streams.

A judge has taken Pink Floyd’s side in a court battle between the band and its label, EMI, and digital downloads are at stake. The band says its 11-year-old contract only permits EMI to sell complete albums, not individual tracks, but the label has been offering downloads of individual songs through online services like iTunes.

The word “record” was used in the contract, which EMI believes implies physical media. Therefore, the label thinks that it can do whatever it wants as far as digital downloads go. The judge was quoted in Bloomberg saying, “There is nothing in the terms ‘album’ or ‘record’ to suggest they apply to the physical product only.” The court seems to support Pink Floyd’s goal to preserve the artistic integrity of its work.

This isn’t the first struggle EMI has had with artists over online content. Social media darlings OK Go recently ended their relationship with the label and announced that they’re forming their own label called Paracadute.

Fortunately for listeners who want individual tracks, this court development hasn’t prohibited EMI from making Pink Floyd songs available yet. That might happen later on, though.

Pink Floyd has always resisted singles, preferring to release complete albums intended for straight-through listening. And they’re not the only band that has complained about the shift in focus to singles that the online era has heralded. But even if you’re sympathetic to the artistic vision, it’s hard to see these sorts of restrictions as shrewd business moves.

Single tracks completely dominate digital downloads, and digital downloads make up the extreme majority of music sales now. It’s possible that the age of the album has all but ended. Blogger es una plataforma de blogging (vaya sorpresa) extremadamente sencilla y amigable. Fue creada por Pyra Labs a fines de los 90 y gracias a su simpleza ayudó a popularizar el concepto de blog: Si te ofrecían la plataforma y el alojamiento, y sólo necesitabas escribir, no había dónde perderse.  En la actualidad, millones de personas tienen su blog autoalojado o en un proveedor gratuito como Blogger, Wordpress, Typepad u otro.  Los que no, al menos saben de qué se trata el concepto.

Pues bien, tanto en el caso de Blogger como Wordpress y Typepad todo es gratis: tienes alojamiento, todo está preinstalado, te dan un bonito subdominio y algunas opciones de personalización, pero son bastante limitadas. En particular, los skins, themes o templates  se eligen de un abanico limitado y casi no se pueden alterar. Eso hasta ahora, porque Blogger anunció que permitirá que hagas tu propio template mediante una herramienta llamada Blogger Template Designer.

La herramienta permite empezar de cero o bien tomar un template de la colección de presentaciones prediseñadas y empezar a modificarlo:  el layout, el fondo, la tipografía, los botones, las imágenes, la hoja de estilos y lo que se te ocurra. Cada cambio se puede previsualizar instantáneamente y deshacer si no te gusta, con controles tanto o más intuitivos que los mejores editores WYSIWYG de escritorio.

La funcionalidad ha sido desplegada en un beta privado que ha obtenido muy buena crítica entre los testers, y esperan sacarla a producción a la brevedad.

Sabemos que en FayerWayer muchos de los lectores tienen o quieren tener su propio blog… mal que mal todos llevamos un reportero dentro. Puede que a la hora de elegir en qué plataforma quieren empezar, la funcionalidad de crear o modificar el aspecto de tu blog a tu gusto sea decisiva e incline la balanza hacia Blogger. Pero ya que estamos de este lado del mundo y hablamos español, no puedo evitar comentar que Bligoo ofrece lo mismo desde hace muuuucho tiempo.  Lo justo es justo.
