In a statement, AOL CEO Tim Armstrong said, “After nearly a decade-long partnership in search, we’re looking forward to expanding our global relationship to mobile search and YouTube. All aspects of our partnership will be improved by this deal.”

The extension of the deal wasn’t a given by any means; the $1 billion investment Google made in AOL back in 2005 proved to be disastrous financially. Further, Microsoft has been aggressively making deals to grow marketshare for Bing, most notably with Yahoo, which now sees Bing powering Yahoo search and its related advertising.

With the renewed AOL deal, Google locks up about 2.3% of the search market according to the most recent numbers from comScore. Google currently has 65.8% of the market, while Microsoft has 27.1% between Bing and Yahoo.

Beyond web search, today’s deal also broadens Google’s reach on mobile and gets additional premium content onto YouTube –- both of which are currently high priorities for the company, as CEO Eric Schmidt noted in his statement on the deal. “It’s particularly exciting to see our relationship expand into video and mobile. These areas are now at the heart of users’ online experiences and at the core of both of our businesses,” he said.

Entre todas las novedades de Apple anunciadas ayer por Steve Jobs está Ping, una nueva red social que permite que cualquier usuario que tenga una cuenta de iTunes pueda compartir sus gustos musicales, lo que han comprado, reseñado y votado ...en iTunes, (valga la redundancia).

Ping llega al espectro de las redes sociales musicales; creo mucho que el futuro social en internet, al igual que los contenidos, se basa en nichos, en temáticas específicas que reunen personas en base a sus intereses. Por lo tanto, desde ese punto de vista Ping "compite" con Last.fm en gran medida y con MySpace en menor medida.

Con Last.fm la competencia es frontal porque son dos redes sociales destinadas exactamente al mismo objetivo: descubrir nueva música, conocer y seguir personas para aprender o comparar gustos musicales, reseñas y calificaciones. Las dos redes sociales te dejan ver los conciertos de un artista y marcar que vas a ir. Con MySpace es diferente porque no necesariamente está centrada en la música, aunque muchos artistas la usan para promocionarse y compartir sus obras.

¿Pero cuál es la diferencia fundamental entre Last.fm, MySpace y Ping?

Los dos primeros están "atados" a una actividad social: escuchar/descubrir música, mientras que Ping lo está a un producto: iTunes. Ese es mi problema principal con esta nueva red social, parece estar diseñada para vender (el servicio de compra/venta de música) y no para socializar.

Pero esa es tan sola la principal de una larga lista de razones por las cuales no me gusta ni me convence el esfuerzo social de Apple. El segundo problema que tengo es que se ha intentado adaptar una red social a una tienda de música. Todo bien, Apple tiene un diseño excepcional pero lamentablemente no funciona. Mi perfil parece un escaparate, poco énfasis en la persona, mucho énfasis en las actividades que generan clics que pueden generar ventas.

Ping es exclusiva (a iTunes) cuando debería ser inclusiva a cualquier cosa relacionada con escuchar música. Mi actividad en Spotify, Grooveshark o Last.fm son tan importantes como en iTunes, pero no hay manera de transportarlas a la red social, más de la mitad de la música que escucho, compro o califico se pierde debido a que Apple le da más énfasis a vender que socializar.

También es un problema que Ping exista como una pestaña más de la tienda de música de iTunes y no sea una red social por si misma en la web. Pero sobre todo: que cualquier persona pueda usarla independientemente de si tiene o no tiene la aplicación instalada, perdiendo una oportunidad inmensa de ser un jugador importante, real e influyente en el web social.

El no vivir en la web atrae una larga serie de problemas más:

• Hay que descargar una aplicación, además de crear una cuenta, para usarlo.
• Es lento, muy lento.
• Las mejoras tardan más (requiere una actualización de software).
• Es extremadamente difícil (imposible problemente) integrarlo con otros servicios.
• Al ser una aplicación es muy poco accesible. Redes sociales como Last.fm, Twitter o Facebook permiten tener una "vista previa" de la actividad de un usuario entrando a un URL corto e identificativo. Para hacer lo mismo en Ping es necesario tener previamente la última versión de iTunes y los URLs únicos son de más de 80 caracteres.

Steve Jobs mencionó que tienen potencialmente 160 millones de usuarios que pueden entrar y usar la red social. Google Buzz puede ser usado por todos y cada uno de los usuarios de Gmail y eso no ha significado éxito alguno. De la misma forma creo que Ping no alcanzará masa crítica por todo lo antes mencinado, aún cuando hayan tantas personas con una cuenta de iTunes.

Por mi parte seguiré usando Last.fm que registra mi actividad, sin importar el reproductor o la aplicación que se para escuchar música. Ping muy probablemente sea "exitosa" de la misma forma que MobileMe es "exitoso". Está ahí, lo usa mucha gente, pero no reemplazará nada, no cambiará el juego social, ni alcanzará los niveles masivos que otras redes sociales tienen y que me imagino que Apple espera lograr para atraer nuevos clientes y más ventas.

Dimdim 6 la herramienta online para mantener reuniones virtuales, de la que ya os hablamos hace algún tiempo, añade algunas pequeñas mejoras a su versión 6.

Con esta nueva revisión, tendremos la posibilidad de hacer cosas como: compartir sólo ciertas áreas de nuestro escritorio, embeber contenido multimedia en tiempo real (Youtube, Flickr…) o almacenar archivos en la nube para compartirlos después de forma segura.

Además de esto también han mejorado el sistema de videoconferencia, aumentando el tamaño de visualización del vídeo y el número de personas simultáneas hasta cuatro, con opción de ver todo a pantalla completa.

Una de las opciones que me han parecido más curiosas, es la de encuestas, y es que la aplicación pone a nuestra disposición un sistema para que los interlocutores puedan realizar votaciones en tiempo real para llegar a un acuerdo.

Algunas mejoras interesantes que nos ayudarán a ser más productivos durante nuestras reuniones online.

God did not create the universe, the man who is arguably Britain's most famous living scientist says in a forthcoming book.

In the new work, The Grand Design, Professor Stephen Hawking argues that the Big Bang, rather than occurring following the intervention of a divine being, was inevitable due to the law of gravity.

In his 1988 book, A Brief History of Time, Hawking had seemed to accept the role of God in the creation of the universe. But in the new text, co-written with American physicist Leonard Mlodinow, he said new theories showed a creator is "not necessary".

The Grand Design, an extract of which appears in the Times today, sets out to contest Sir Isaac Newton's belief that the universe must have been designed by God as it could not have created out of chaos.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing," he writes. "Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

In the forthcoming book, published on 9 September, Hawking says that M-theory, a form of string theory, will achieve this goal: "M-theory is the unified theory Einstein was hoping to find," he theorises.

"The fact that we human beings – who are ourselves mere collections of fundamental particles of nature – have been able to come this close to an understanding of the laws governing us and our universe is a great triumph."

Hawking says the first blow to Newton's belief that the universe could not have risen from chaos was the observation in 1992 of a planet orbiting a star other than our Sun. "That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions – the single sun, the lucky combination of Earth-sun distance and solar mass – far less remarkable, and far less compelling as evidence that the earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he writes.

Hawking had previously appeared to accept the role of God in the creation of the universe, writing in his bestseller A Brief History Of Time in 1988, he said: "If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason–- for then we should know the mind of God."

Hawking resigned as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University last year after 30 years in the position.

Los jóvenes en China están empezando a olvidar los caracteres de sus escrituras nacionales. Al parecer, el uso constante de teclados basados en el alfabeto occidental está provocando amnesia de caracteres. Los resultados del estudio arrojar que 83% de los 2,072 encuestados admite que ya no recuerda cómo escribir algunas letras en su idioma original.

"Puedo recordar la forma, pero no recuerdo los trazos que necesitas para escribirla", menciona Li Hanwei, una estudiante de la Universidad de Hong Kong. De acuerdo con Siok Wai Ting, un profesor de lingüística del mismo instituto, una de las posibles explicaciones es que el lenguaje chino utiliza un área diferente del cerebro que el alfabeto romano, mucho más cercana a la parte motriz, relacionada con la manuscrita.

Uno de los peligros es que olvidar cómo escribir un caracter puede repercutir afectar a la larga la capacidad de lectura. El problema es que los caracteres chinos no son muy compatibles con mecanismos de escritura como los teclados. Aunque se ha intentado introducir el lenguaje oriental dentro de las computadores y dispositivos móviles, han resultado en un completo fracaso. De este modo, los jóvenes se orientan cada vez más y más hacia una escritura occidental.

¿Hay solución? Parece que la oportunidad de evitar esta problemática está en las pantallas táctiles. La idea es que el usuario ingrese a los comandos trazando la letra, como en las primeras PDAs. Sin embargo, el panorama luce sombrío mientras el alfabeto occidental siga siendo el estándar --- aún en aparatos fabricados fuera de Estados Unidos. A pesar de los esfuerzos para integrar idiomas como el árabe, el cirílico o el hebreo, llegará un momento en que los jóvenes se verán obligados a decantarse entre las formas de escritura tradicionales o una cultura global. ¿Cuál ganará?

[Updated at 1:05 p.m.] Mariner Energy, owner of the production platform, said in a press release that no hydrocarbon spill has been reported after an initial flyover of the incident.

"Mariner has notified and is working with regulatory authorities in response to this incident," the statement said. "The cause is not known, and an investigation will be undertaken. During the last week of August 2010, production from this facility averaged approximately 9.2 million cubic feet of natural gas per day and 1,400 barrels of oil and condensate."

The company also said no injuries have been reported.

[Updated at 12:48 p.m.] David Reed, a paramedic on board the Rowan Gorilla II oil rig located 14 miles from the platform that exploded told submitted an iReport saying he saw all thirteen workers rescued from the water.

“We were up here in the radio room and all of sudden we saw a whole bunch of smoke coming from the platform," Reed said. "Shortly after all the radios started lighting up like a Christmas tree. They called any helicopters in the area, any boats in the area to respond, they were saying there were people in the water. There were multiple people in the water.”

[Updated at 12:32 p.m.] White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday that the federal government has "assets ready" to respond to any environmental problems resulting from the explosion of an oil platform off the coast of Louisiana.

[Updated at 12:31 p.m.] All thirteen people aboard a production platform that exploded in the Gulf are accounted for and safely on a commercial vessel according to initial information, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement.

"We continue to gather information as we respond with full force, and have oil spill response assets ready for immediate deployment should we receive any reports of pollution," the statement said.

[Updated at 11:53 a.m.] U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Colclough tells CNN that 12 people from the production platform are in water immersion suits as they await rescue.

Colclough told CNN there are reports the production platform, which is for both oil and natural gas, is still on fire.

"We don't know what caused the rig to catch on fire," he told CNN, noting the incident is under investigation.

Asked about concerns regarding oil leaks or pollution, Colclough said "there are reports the rig was not actively producing any product, so we don't know if there's any risk of pollution."

Mariner Energy is a leading independent oil and gas exploration and production company in the Gulf of Mexico. About 85 percent of the company's production comes from offshore assets, with a growing share of that coming from deepwater developments.

The explosion comes nearly five months after the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded April 20, killing 11 people and causing oil to gush into
the Gulf of Mexico, leading to one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history.

[Updated at 11:43 a.m.] U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Colclough tells CNN that all 13 workers involved in the production platform explosion are accounted for, but one person is injured.

Coast Guard Choppers are on the way to the site 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay.

[Posted at 11:33 a.m.] An oil production platform has exploded 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana, with 12 people overboard and one missing, the Coast Guard said Thursday morning.

Rescue attempts are under way for at least 12 people, Coast Guard spokesman John Edwards told CNN. 13 people were on board the production platform total, Edwards said, noting 12 have been accounted for, but one person was missing.

The accident took place 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana on the Vermilion Oil production platform 380, which is owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy.

The Coast Guard has multiple helicopters, an airplane and several Coast Guard cutters en route. It's unknown if there are any injuries.

En un día común, ¿más o menos cuántas veces revisas tu correo? Por lo menos en mi caso, es lo primero que hago antes de levantarme de la cama, y lo último antes de irme a dormir. Gracias a nuestros dispositivos móviles, nos damos una escapadita furtiva a la hora de la comida, del café o en el gimnasio para revisar si nos ha llegado algo a la bandeja de entrada. Admitámoslo: por más que intentemos zafarnos un poco del trabajo, un alud de mensajes nos sigue a todas partes. Sí, el correo electrónico mató nuestro tiempo libre.

Más allá de las experiencias propias, un estudio de la firma Xobni muestra que dos de cada tres estadounidenses y británicos revisa su correo electrónico fuera del trabajo. No sólo eso, sino que la mitad de la gente de EE.UU. también lo checa durante sus vacaciones. La causa de este comportamiento es la ansiedad que provoca el no saber si ha llegado algo importante y que requiera una respuesta inmediata.

Esta encuesta fue realizada a 2.200 estadounidenses y británicos, quienes admitieron que revisan el correo en vacaciones, fines de semana, días de asueto... ¡e incluso cuando están enfermos! De acuerdo con el estudio, revisar el correo es la primera actividad del día para uno de cada cinco estadounideses. No sólo eso, sino que la cuarta parte de los encuestados siente que no puede manejar la cantidad de mensajes que recibe durante un periodo vacacional. Me dirán que es muy sencillo quitarse la adicción sólo cerrando el correo. Bueno, los reto a que lo hagan por un par de días, y luego me dicen cómo les fue con la avalancha.

Actualmente, se ha convertido en una necesidad vital aprender a gestionar de forma correcta el correo electrónico. Sea que tengamos una o varias cuentas, sin organización es imposible sobrevivir en el mundo laboral. En estos días, herramientas como el Priority Inbox de Gmail se convierten en el mejor aliado. Y mientras no aparezca un mecanismo que sea más funcional que un e-mail, seguiremos así, leyendo a hurtadillas los mensajes del trabajo, con la esperanza de que no haya pasado nada importante mientras perdíamos el tiempo comiendo o durmiendo.

The users in most countries around the world are used to products and features not being available to them – receiving money through PayPal or buying music through iTunes doesn’t work for me, for example – but Ping is different. It’s supposed to be a social network; its competitors, Last.FM and MySpace, are available in most countries in the world. Users expect it to just work, but in my version of iTunes, Ping simply doesn’t exist.

Here’s a thread from Apple’s support forums, in which users from all around the world complain that they can’t find Ping. After Apple’s big announcement, most of them don’t even consider the possibility that this great new social network is not available in their country: they think they’re doing something wrong. But Apple hasn’t said a word about availability in other countries, so it might be a long wait for all these users.

From Apple’s point of view, it’s understandable it chose to tie Ping closely to the music store. One feature Steve Jobs had highlighted is buying a song directly from a status update; something you obviously cannot do if you don’t have access to the store. But the social networking part of Ping will suffer for it.

For an example of how being available only in a small number of countries can hurt Ping, consider one of its most important features: concert listings. This is where Last.FM shines; go to any place in the world, and you’ll be able to see which concerts are available, when, at what clubs and who’s attending. But if residents of a certain country cannot access Ping, then the concert listings for that particular country will be a sad and empty sight.

Facebook, which hasn’t really focused on music so far, is also available in most countries in the world; it’s the de facto standard for social networking, and it has half a billion active users. Yes, Ping is directly tied to music, but users aren’t used to network from iTunes. Should Facebook introduce some features similar to those Ping has, it would automatically have a huge advantage simply because it would work for all users, not just the select few. If Apple has any serious aspirations to grow Ping into a global social networking powerhouse, it should strongly consider making it available everywhere.

We’ve contacted Apple to find out when (and if) Ping might become available in countries other than the initial 23, and are still awaiting their response.

That’s not all though. The latest version of the Vlingo app also lets users share the service with their friends with the click of a button and also update their status on Facebook, Twitter and/or Foursquare at the same time by saying “social update” and speaking the message.

Previous Vlingo features remain, too: you can still use the app to send text and email messages, search the web, use Google maps and more.

As for BlackBerry, iPhone and Nokia S60 users – they’ll have to be patient for a while before they can start updating their status and locations with their voice.

Vlingo says it plans to roll out this functionality to other supported platforms in a future release but didn’t mention specific dates.

-       Conseguir que al menos 3 contenidos subidos por el candidato a MktFan alcancen un mínimo de 4 votos (en cada uno de ellos) de otros miembros registrados de la comunidad. No se computarán los votos anónimos.

-       Votar en MktFan, estando logado en el site, al menos 15 contenidos subidos por otros miembros de la comunidad. No se computarán los votos anónimos

3. Criterio de selección del receptor de la beca

Para mantener la filosofía meritocrática que caracteriza a nuestra comunidad, se ha decidido que sean los propios aspirantes quienes, a través de un sistema de votación, decidan quién recibirá la beca de AERCO.

Para tal fin, el día 9 de septiembre de 2010, MktFan enviará, vía e-mail, a todos los aspirantes que hayan cumplido los requisitos especificados en el punto 2, una encuesta en la que se le pedirá que elija los 3 candidatos que, a su juicio, más y mejor contribuyen a la difusión de contenidos en la comunidad. Evidentemente, los aspirantes a la beca no podrán votarse a sí mismos/as. En el cuestionario remitido se facilitará un link al perfil  de cada candidato en MktFan,  con objeto de que se pueda evaluar qué es lo que ha compartido o votado el resto de aspirantes.

Conseguirá la beca el aspirante que mayor número de apoyos haya conseguido el resto. En caso de empate, se hará con la plaza quien más noticias en portada haya conseguido en MktFan durante el periodo citado arriba. Si persistiera el empate, recibirá la beca quien haya efectuado un mayor número de votos a contenidos de terceros. Finalmente, de continuar el empate, se elegirá a quien primero se hubiera inscrito en esta convocatoria.

Para dar transparencia al proceso de selección, MktFan se compromete a facilitar a quien lo solicite los resultados nominales de la votación.

“Gracias Central Barrancones por invitación concedida”, debieran escribir en una placa los siete dirigentes de los gremios agrupados en la Confederación de la Producción y el Comercio que hoy almorzarán con el Presidente de la República, Sebastián Piñera, en La Moneda.

“Este encuentro con la CPC es algo que se prometió no hacer nunca”, sostiene una fuente muy cercana al Presidente y que sabe que la única razón por la cual se sentará a la mesa con ellos es por las críticas que generó su decisión de reubicar la central termoeléctrica fuera de Punta de Choros cuando el proyecto estaba recién aprobado. Piñera actuó a título personal, sin consultar a la ministra del medio ambiente ni al director de la Corema, revelando una de las características que más incomoda al empresariado: es impredecible.

“Extraordinariamente capaz, inteligente, pero un personaje que no responde a ninguna lógica de poder. Ni política ni empresarial”, agrega la misma fuente. “La Concertación estuvo 20 años peleando por subir los impuestos y el empresariado dando la lucha para que no subieran. En menos de 30 días su primera gran decisión fue subir los impuestos en tres puntos, habiendo otras alternativas (para financiar la reconstrucción)”, sostiene un empresario del sector farmacéutico.

No hay dos opiniones entre los hombres de negocios consultados por El Mostrador en torno a que la decisión sobre Barrancones fue un “error garrafal, porque lo hizo fuera de la institucionalidad”. Un director de empresas agrega que “probablemente fue por votos, pero cuando uno hace las cosas por votos, casi siempre yerra”. Mientras un empresario vitivinícola apunta a “que está actuando como ejecutivo de una empresa, no como Presidente de la República, que es lo que tiene que aprender a hacer”.

Sólo una voz reconoce que Piñera “se vio envuelto en un callejón sin salida, porque había hecho declaraciones sobre esta central y tuvo que optar entre ser consecuente con sus palabras o con el empresariado”, aludiendo a la cuña que sacaron a relucir los medios de sus dichos en la campaña sobre la central Barrancones.

A seis meses de asumir, el sector más poderoso del país echa de menos el trato de la Concertación. “Sienten que se los respetaba más, se los cuidaba más. A Piñera le da lo mismo. No tiene que rendirle pleitesía a nadie ni devolver favores, por lo tanto, va a tratar de hacer lo que le parezca mejor”, sostienen. Otro lo grafica con una imagen: “No hay peor astilla que la del mismo palo”

A Piñera  podrán lloverle las críticas por su estilo, pero genera una confianza ciega si se trata de materias económicas. “El país está creciendo. Los empresarios grandes lo van a pasar peor, pero en Chile la riqueza está súper concentrada. La gran demanda de empleo la generan las medianas y pequeñas empresas y Piñera está preocupado de trabajar para esos sectores”, asegura el empresario  farmacéutico.

“Está rompiendo la lentitud para tomar decisiones de los gobiernos de la Concertación, que se encontraron con una política económica que tuvieron que administrar. Piñera cree en el modelo. Los empresarios están felices porque la economía va para arriba, como avión a chorro”, afirma el socio de un banco mediano.  “Nadie piensa que va a seguir haciendo estas cosas”, agrega. “Esa ansiedad va a ir disminuyendo con el tiempo, las encuestas lo van a tranquilizar”, apunta un director de empresas.

Para un sector “mimado” no es fácil asumir que el Presidente por el que votaron los reciba por primera vez en seis meses en una actividad protocolar y a la que asisten con la esperanza de ser escuchados. Anteriormente, la CPC había concurrido a Palacio para ser informada del proyecto de alza de impuestos y la segunda vez para conocer el Plan Bicentenario.

Piñera es para los empresarios un cuerpo con dos cabezas: una les inspira desconfianza porque sienten que puede hacer lo que se le antoje; la otra les genera confianza porque saben que hará las cosas bien.

“Siempre ha tirado para su lado. Como empresario salió ganando en el Caso Chispas. Como senador buscó lo que le diera más dividendos. Fue el primero en negociar un alza del IVA que todos sabíamos iba a ser permanente, pero él se preocupó de aparecer generando acuerdos, preparando seguramente el terreno para una futura candidatura (presidencial)”, apunta un empresario del gremio de la construcción.

Cuando era senador criticó duramente a José Yuraszeck –el rostro público de la venta de Enersis al grupo Endesa España, lo que se conoció como Caso Chispas- pero terminó siendo el único que logró canjear sus acciones con la empresa hispana y obtuvo un mejor precio. Esa movida, un mes antes de dejar el Congreso, le reportó ingresos extra por  $1.465 millones. Y aunque él se ha defendido diciendo que no se enteró, porque la transacción la realizó José Cox, su socio en CMB, le costó un duro reproche de Andrés Allamand.

Un empresario del rubro pesquero apunta a que “el Presidente no puede actuar motivado por las presiones; en Punta Arenas se acabó la cuota de pesca del erizo, los pescadores alegaron y él les dio 15 días para seguir pescando”. Se refiere a la negociación de último minuto entre la intendenta de Magallanes, Liliana Kusanovic, el seremi de Gobierno de la zona, Miguel Schweitzer, y  el subsecretario de Pesca, Pablo Galilea, para extender en dos semanas la temporada de extracción del erizo. Al igual que la decisión de relocalizar la central de la empresa franco-belga Suez Energy, fue calificada como una “excepción”.

Qué tan afable será el trato y cuán libre será la agenda de conversación está por verse. Aunque la presencia de los ministros Cristián Larroulet, de la Secretario General de la Presidencia; Felipe Larraín, de Hacienda, y Juan Andrés Fontaine, de Economía será un elemento de distensión. Porque los tres son los más cercanos al empresariado y no estuvieron de acuerdo con el alza de impuestos.

Y si los empresarios llegan con caras largas, a Piñera no le va a quitar el sueño. Mal que mal varios tienen saldos en contra: la Cámara Chilena de la Construcción por los edificios pésimamente edificados que quedaron inhabitables después del terremoto; la Sociedad Nacional de Minería por la inseguridad con la que se trabaja en muchos yacimientos. A los bancos los tiene estrangulados con el proyecto del Sernac financiero.

Las sonrisas entonces serán sólo para las cámaras.

Radiolab investigates some of world’s most intriguing scientific questions in a unique conversational format. Recent episodes have examined the importance of words in human development and time. First time listeners will probably notice that the show also just sounds different.

Before becoming a radio producer, Jab Abumrad, one of Radiolab’s creators, was as an experimental musician. Abumrad’s passion for ProTools is apparent in the show’s textured soundscape, which is layered with a variety of sound effects and quick edits. Perhaps the show’s only downside is its frequency. There are only a handful of episodes every season because one Radiolab episode requires months to produce.

In Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History, Carlin, a veteran journalist turned podcaster, dissects the textbook version of events. In shows that often run over an hour, the host passionately retells some of history’s best stories.

Hardcore History has become one of the most downloaded podcasts on iTunes, and Carlin’s widespread appeal can also be attributed to his insight. One podcast asked, “Could widespread child abuse in earlier eras explain some of history’s brutality?” Another show was based off the question, “Does the toughness of peoples play any role in history?” Don’t let the name fool you; all material is appropriate for younger listeners.

Planet Money is NPR’s podcast on global economics and business. Initially created by veteran public radio reporters Alex Blumberg and Adam Davidson to explain the recent financial crisis, the show quickly became one of the most popular and praised podcasts available.

Planet Money’s success lies in how it tackles complex subjects with great storytelling. A financial instrument like a Collateralized Debt Obligation (CDO) may sound impossibly boring, but Planet Money routinely makes these types of things the heart of a thrilling narrative. The team continues to explore the financial collapse, but they’ve expanded their scope to include all aspects of the global economy.

The Internet is full of podcasts that cater to students learning foreign languages. For those interested in the major European languages, Radio Lingua is a good bet. Both are rated highly on iTunes by users.

For those of us who struggle to calculate a 15% tip, The Math Dude’s podcast is a must-listen. Every week, affable nerd Jason Marshall explains basic concepts like how to calculate the area of an object or how to add faster. When Marshall isn’t podcasting, he researches “infrared light emitted by starburst galaxies and quasars” at Caltech, which just means his left-brain knows what’s up.

Every Sunday, comedians Andy Zaltzman and John Oliver recap the week’s events in The Bugle, a satirical podcast that is easily one of the funniest listens on the Internet. Think an audio version of The Daily Show, where Oliver is also a regular. The Bugle’s focus tends to be on the biggest international news, but the duo’s separate locations – Zaltzman in London and Oliver in New York City – ensure a focus on the English-speaking world’s antics. Although the pair has a leftward slant, there are no sacred cows. The Bugle even takes aim at itself in its tagline: “An audio newspaper for a visual world.”

Excited about your new Facebook page but don’t know what’s next?  What does a truly advanced company look like in social business?  They can say yes to seven or more of these ten criteria.

We’ve been interviewing the most sophisticated brands in the world when it comes to social business for our upcoming report on “Enterprise Social Strategists Role”.  We’ve come to learn which companies are advanced and why.  Secondly, I meet a variety of companies who tell me they are “Very advanced, having done this for a few years, and have dozens of Facebook efforts” but when I ask them some specific questions on their sophistication, they often retract their statement.

How to tell if your Company is Advanced: 10 Criteria Of Social Business Maturity.
Corporations that have these and other following elements in place, may truly be sophisticated when it comes to social business:

1. Clear understanding of their customers socialgraphics. Clear understanding of how their customers use social media by knowing the socialgraphics of your customers.  Granular knowledge of where their customers are, which behaviors they use, who they trust for information, and how they influence their peers in the context of their own products.
   The true test? Your company can adjust budgets of your integrated social strategy based on data –not gut feel.
2. Your organization is in Hub and Spoke, Dandelion, or Holistic formation. Social technologies enable all employees that want to talk to customers to do so.  This means a massive change inside of your organization to get ready.  Your company is sophisticated if you’ve organized in the Hub and Spoke, Dandelion, or Holistic and all employees clearly know their role, process, and contact points.
   The true test? A product crises has emerged on YouTube on a Friday evening before a three day weekend and you can sleep peacefully.
3. Corporate website integration: Social sign on. When customers come to the corporate site, they can see which one of their friends uses which product, and what they think about it.  Common technologies would include OpenID, Facebook Connect, and other social sign on technologies.
   The true test? You can disable your corporate registration page and use social logins instead.
4. Personalized corporate website based on social data. When a prospect (someone who’s never logged into you website before) arrives to your corporate website, they receive a customized experience based on their social IDs.  This would be based on Social CRM infrastructure, social sign on technology and a large inventory of personalized content.
   The true test? The voices of the consumers real world friends emerge above that of the brand right on the corporate website, see Levi’s foray.
5. Thriving advocacy program: customers are actively selling on your behalf. The sophisticated marketing program isn’t really the company talking much at all, instead they’ve a thriving advocacy program and word of mouth program that encourages customers to recruit prospects for them –all unpaid.  Learn how to do this, by reading this piece on Forbes.
   The true test? most leads are coming in through existing customers –not your sales team.
6. A community of customers supports each other, reducing support center calls. A company that has a thriving branded community where customers are self-supporting each other with little aid from the brand or the support team is a sign of a sophisticated social support program.
   The true test? A majority of customer support issues are resolved by community faster, with greater satisfaction than your dedicated support team.
7. Anticipation of prospects and customers using Social CRM technology.  Brands can anticipate before a customer has a problem, or grab leads “right out of the air” by using brand monitoring software, intelligent keyword monitoring and responding to be faster than real time using Social CRM strategies.
   The true test? sales and marketing are getting leads before the consideration phase, and the support team reduces inbound calls by triggering the community to resolve a potential issue before it’s escalated.
8. Innovation of new products with customers using web collaboration.  Companies that use these same tools to glean input from customers (ethnographic data collection) or create private communities, or use collaboration and innovation tools like Ideastorm or Uservoice and build new products and services demonstrate true sophistication.
   The true test? faster time to market on products because consumers have dictated the specifications, and less inventory as the product is built on spec.
9. Supply chain is influenced by social data in real time. Social media isn’t just about marketing and support, but is very valuable in listening to customer signals then to anticipate which products, services, and teams should be when and where.
   The true test? Your company is sophisticated if you’re using social data to adjust your supply chain in real time based on customer signals from checkins, tweets, and plancasts.
10. Real time reporting of revenues, costs and efficiency:  I’ve met with some of the most advanced teams, and they have clear reporting and can measure the increased revenues (over the total cost of the program) to tell their executives the true ROI of their business program.
    The true test? Real time dashboard measures the health of all social channels revenues, CSAT, sentiment and overall program costs.

We’ve done research on the roadmap for companies to reach these 10 levels of nirvana, but have found few companies that have done a few, or even a majority of them. If you know of any companies that have achieved five out of ten of these criteria, we’d love to know, please leave a comment.

Radiohead no para de trasgredir reglas preestablecidas durante mucho tiempo por la industria discográfica quienes, hace solamente algunos años, manejaban la música que se escuchaba o se dejaba de escuchar. Eso cambió gracias a internet y uno de los impulsores fue Radiohead, allá a fines del 2007, cuando la banda inglesa le permitió a sus fanáticos descargar In Rainbows pagando lo que quisieran e incluso permitiendo que lo bajaran gratuitamente.

Ahora, dando un paso todavía más allá, el grupo quiere seguir compartiendo y demostrando que está completamente a favor que las personas participen en lo que es Radiohead hoy y en contra del negocio de las discográficas y la distribución de música, permite que sus seguidores descarguen un DVD de manera gratuita.

El 23 de agosto del 2009 Radiohead dio un show en Praga que fue filmado desde diferentes lugares del público con 50 cámaras. Durante todo este tiempo se estuvo realizando la edición y lo que se terminó obteniendo es una serie de videos donde se puede disfrutar del recital que dieron como si el que lo estuviera viendo hubiese estado allí en ese momento, entre la audiencia.

La grabación, que fue titulada Radiohead – Live in Praha, puede ser descargada de manera gratuita en diferentes formados (AVI, HD Quicktime, Apple Movie, iPad y iPhone) a través de éste sitio web. En el sitio se puede leer que está estrictamente prohibido que esta grabación sea vendida y que fue hecha "por los fans para los fans".

Por cierto, hace algún tiempo Thom Yorke, presentándose en el Big Chill Festival, anunció una nueva canción de Radiohead llamada "Give Up The Ghost", que se trata de una canción que estuvo tocando bastante en los últimos tiempos pero en el supergrupo que formó llamado Atoms For Peace.

It’s free and comes with a slew of touch interface bells and whistles built right in. The app is intended to allow for seamless navigation between tweets, photos, web pages, videos and other media and updates. It’s also usable even for those who don’t have Twitter accounts.

Twitter for iPad [iTunes link] has a few new UI touches that you haven’t seen elsewhere. These features are custom-designed for the larger screen and touch capabilities of the iPad. It also caters to what the iPad was made for: media consumption rather than creation. Twitter’s Leland Rechis, a mobile UX designer, writes on the Twitter blog that the iPad is “a device that really lets content shine.”

The main interface is a series of panes that can expand and retract based on the kind of content the user wants to access. “Tapping on a Tweet opens a pane to the right. Depending on the content in that Tweet, you’ll see a video or photo, or maybe a news story, or perhaps another Tweet. You can continue tapping on Tweets, opening new panes, and getting new content as long as you’d like,” wites Rechis.

Media viewing is optimized for the iPad, as well. Videos play in-line with other content and can be loaded while you’re browsing through your timeline. You can pinch a video to view it fullscreen, too.

Finally, Twitter has really done some interesting things with touchscreen capabilities in this app. When you pinch a tweet, you’ll see details about the author and have a list of actions you can take, including reply and retweet. A two-finger pull-down gesture will show the entire conversation around a tweet.

It’s a creative way to approach multitouch app building, and we look forward to playing with it ourselves. We’re also really looking forward to what apps may come to other tablets in the future.

Hoy mismo ha sido liberada la octava versión del programa de modelado CAD en 2D y 3D de Google, SketchUp. Es toda una noticia si pensamos que una aplicación como esta podría acabar convirtiéndose en un estándar por la disponibilidad de una versión gratuita bastante completa. Es cierto que aún le quedan importantes mejoras que realizar, pero es obvio que en Google están trabajando duro en ello.

Las novedades de esta actualización se centran en tres áreas principales. Por un lado, se ha integrado completamente Google Maps dentro de SketchUp con la clara intención de permitirnos geolocalizar bien nuestros diseños en su entorno, de hecho los mapas tomados como referencia para nuestros diseños tienen ahora mayor calidad y son en color.

Otro de los pilares a tocar en esta nueva versión ha sido el uso de sólidos, característica que será exclusiva de SketchUp Pro 8. Se han añadido herramientas para poder trabajar con los sólidos de forma sencilla. Una de las razones para hacer tal cosa ha sido el poder crear sólidos complejos a partir de sólidos más simples, usando métodos simples de sustracción, intersección, etc.

Por último también hay novedades al trabajar con planos en dos dimensiones. En este caso se han añadido herramientas para obtener cotas angulares y para mover mejor los elementos dibujados dentro del plano, con mucha más precisión para colocarlos justo donde queremos. Un punto a destacar de SketchUp 8 es que posee la capacidad de exportar e importar planos en formato DWG/DXF 2010
